Outreach Services
Background
Access to appropriate child mental health services continues to directly affect children and families. Unmet mental health treatment needs of children often "snowball," directly impacting multiple life domains. Researchers have found almost a threefold increase in children presenting to pediatric offices with psychosocial problems compared to 20 years ago, according to the Journal of Pediatrics (v105, No. 6, 6 June 2000). Early identification helps children avoid many of the problems associated with early onset of mental health, substance abuse, and conduct related problems. The Report of the Surgeon General's Conference of Child Mental Health calls for a greater outreach and education effort to primary care physicians to help refer children for mental health services.
For these reasons, CFN has created a pilot project to provide assessment, consultation, and treatment services in the offices of Durham Primary Care Physicians and Pediatricians. Caring Family Network's Outreach Services pilot project will create a bridge between medical and mental health treatment by increasing referrals of Medicaid children to appropriate, supportive mental health services. This one-year pilot program allows the highest level of collaboration to help establish best practice guidelines, and to develop and foster important relationships between the medical and mental health agencies of Durham, NC, paving the way for similar programs.
